Development of Human Atrioventricular Node and Bundle

Abstract
With the histological method the development of the atrioventricular node and bundle were studied on the 29 human fetuses range from 8mm C. R. length to full-term and 5 infants and children from 1 to 5 year old. The results obtained are as follows.
The atrioventricular node was observed in a 8mm embryo and appeared to be derived from two cellular primodia in the posterior wall of the common atrium. During septation of the heart the right atrioventricular nodal primordium was located below the attachment of the right venous valves. The left atrioventricular nodal primordium was observed anterior to the left sinal horn. Two atrioventricular node was fused at 200mm fetus. In most postnatal specimens 2 atrioventricular node components appeared as one fused structure that was partially separated by branches of the nodal artery and vein.
The atrioventricular bundle was first noted in a 17i embryo and appeared to be derived from large clear cells of the posterior atrioventricular canal. At this time the bundles were continued with both nodal primordia. At 70mm embryo the bundle formed a broad band across the top of the interventricular septum and continued into the both ventricles. In the postnatal heart, the atrioventricular bundle penetrated the thickened annulus fibrosus and joined to the atrioventricular node.
